Safety First Firearms Training

Providing handgun training for the purpose of personal protection and recreation through NRA-certified courses under the auspices of the California Department of Justice and the respective counties.

What makes Safety First unique?

The student will be trained to develop a process for a wide range of real life situations in which the handgun serves as the foundation of self-defense, but also as the option of last resort.

Class sizes are kept small with the objective of providing ample attention to each student’s needs, following the NRA protocol of no more than four people on the line at a time. The focus will be on developing the highest level of proficiency each student is capable of, while reloading and overcoming simulated pistol malfunctions in live fire.

Students will be introduced to a variety of handguns to tactilely illustrate the firearms described in the materials and for the purpose of experiencing firsthand how they feel and function. Additionally, there will be a demonstration of holsters, lasers and lights to supplement the use of a firearm.

Practice with drawing from concealment for CCW students – holster or purse – will be performed at the student’s discretion.

Classroom meetings at the Placer Sporting Club typically take place around a coffee table in a relaxed, informal setting that encourages discussion and camaraderie.

All-inclusive pricing: Basic and first time CCW instruction include the indoor range and classroom fees.

Finally, a syllabus outlining the course of fire will be emailed to you in advance of the class, so that you can come better prepared (and relaxed). Enjoying the experience is a priority.

What people are saying:

Michael Bullington, the proprietor of Safety First Firearm Training, is an experienced and skilled instructor. He seamlessly adapts his training to match the needs and level of his students. I’ve had the benefit of his tips, techniques, and guidance for both CCW renewal, as well as for learning the basics of trap shooting. Michael first talks you through what to do, then demonstrates, and then gently and positively coaches you as you perform. And, what should be obvious, but is of paramount import, it’s always about “Safety First”. I’m pleased to recommend Michael without reservation.

My experience with Michael Bullington as a gun instructor and as a gun safety coach was nothing short of phenomenal. He explained in great detail why we were doing what we were doing, and gave clear and concise instructions on what to do. An incredible coach of technique, he had me blasting pigeons out of the sky easily.

Me being a first time shooter, Michael laid out a plan, and demonstrated each step before even having me pick up my weapon. It was informative, and helped me immensely during our session. I had a ton of fun with Michael, as we were cracking jokes and entertaining ourselves, all the while going about our business safely.

As an instructor, I cannot recommend Michael Bullington enough. He taught me proper safety habits, and helped hone my beginners technique away all in one session. He is the correct choice as a gun safety coach and shooting instructor.

I bid on a package to go shooting with Michael at a Chamber of Commerce event. I was thrilled when I won as this was a sport I had always wanted to try. I was not disappointed. I had an foreign exchange student living with me at the time and Michael generously took both of us. What a fun day!

Michael is extremely knowledgeable, careful to make sure that safety is the first order of importance, and gives helpful and strategic feedback to improve your shooting. I can not recommend him highly enough. He was patient with me and my exchange daughter, and really made the day fun! I intend on taking another lesson from him as soon as time permits.

Mike Bullington took me and a friend out to the gun range for our first time back in 2016. With Mike’s expertise, he was able to teach us the art of shooting as well as how to be accurate and precise when hitting our targets. By the end of the day, we were able to confidently shoot pistols and rifles. We were able to hit the bullseyes multiple times and had a blast. If it’s your first time shooting and you’re nervous about holding a gun, I would recommend Mike Bullington’s training. His knowledge, expertise, and patience makes for a great experience.

I came to Mike as a friend, out of concern for my safety after my house had been burglarized twice. He showed me how to operate a handgun. He actually helped me to identify the style and caliber that best suits me, by letting me use his handguns. I have found him to be patient with a commendable bedside manner. I’m already looking forward to a follow up appointment and heartily recommend his services.

Mike’s terrific personality and communication skills make him a great instructor. He has a contagious passion for shooting which is only overshadowed by his excitement and joy that comes upon the success of his students. Mike is a consummate professional, always with a focus on safety, and I jump at the opportunity to train with him.

Meet Mike

Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, I have lived near Sacramento, California since 1980 with my wife and family. Most of my working life has been spent in technical and financial sales, through which I've developed the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

My firearms handling experience includes handguns, rifles and shotguns for self-defense, hunting, competition and just plain fun. My passion is showing others how to experience the same enjoyment that I do on a firing range and to be better prepared to defend themselves in the face of an imminent threat.

My interests include ballroom dancing, playing the piano since I was a mere lad, international travel, learning languages (thus far, Spanish, Russian, German and French), reading History with a focus on the American War for Independence, and playing golf with my wife. I’m a board member for the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce and a Rotarian.
